This was for the secret to the main effect Applesauce alone. Howard Hamburg touted the main effect as one of the most astounding effect he’s ever seen performed. That’s saying something!

Patrick Redford’s new book, Applesauce, is a must have. The first two items alone, Applesauce and Horsefeathers are worth the price of admission. Patrick has pushed the concepts of the PM Principle to new and exciting places. These routines are extraordinarily strong and deceptive.

I finally had a chance to finish reading “Applesauce” by Patrick Redford. I thought I would offer a more detailed review.
First off, the book looks and feels great in the hands. It is well made, and one can readily tell that great care was made in creating this book. Aesthetics are never too important to me (judging books by covers and whatnot), but it is nice to have a book on the shelf that has visual appeal and nice artwork. But all of this is meaningless if the book’s contents are garbage or pipe dreams so let me give you an honest overview of the effects in the book.
Applesauce = A relatively simple ACAAN that has a more meaningful presentation than pure coincidence. While it does not meet the “Holy Grail” conditions, I feel that is overrated and mostly for magicians. It does feature a borrowed shuffled deck and truly random cards and numbers. This is a very worthwhile effect.
Horsefeathers = One of my favorites. I won’t go into too much detail, but it plays as strong as any CAAN. It looks very fair and is quite easy to do. I strongly suggest yuou check out Patrick’s performance of this on Youtube. There is one procedure that appears slightly out of place, but it goes by spectators very easily with a bit of attention management.
The Evolution of a Rain King = This effect is an apparent speed memorized deck routine that ends with giving the spectator the rain man abilities at the end. It is packed with variations and alternative handlings so there is surely a handling that fits your skill set and style.
Storm = This effect is dead simple and quite potent. A bit of theatrics will go a long way in strengthening the effect. Essentially a card is peeked and after a quick riffle of the cards the performer knows the selected card, its location in the deck, and the two surrounding cards. This is what the spectator sees and remembers and it is deceptive and powerful.
Advantageous = An open prediction effect that honestly looks weak on paper, but it has great potential. I was preparing to skim through the effect until Patrick himself said, “I can already tell you’re ready to turn the page and move on.” This bit of textual mind reading convinced me to read through the effect with an open mind, and now I think it is definitely worth your time.
Wipe Out = A stage/parlor prediction effect that is slightly cheeky but still reads strong. A spectator deals through a deck and stops whenever they want, and the card they stop on matches your previously written prediction that has been full view the whole time. This is a free choice and the wizard never touches the cards. There is also a close up variation that is almost as strong.
Stop Poker Tells = This is Patrick’s take on the classic “Think Stop” plot. The true beauty in this effect is the subtleties that Mr. Redford offers the gentle reader. The “Advanced card workers” tips turn this basic plot on its nose. I am resisting the urge to say what these tips are, but sufficed to say many will find use for these tips in this effect as well as others.
Card Counter = I was privileged enough to see this performed live and it fooled the pants off of myself and the other magi that were there (metaphorically, of course). A truly random card is removed from the deck and the remainder of the deck is quickly thumbed through face up. After a bit of thinking, the performer names the missing card. Multiple methods are taught, and the most impressive feat is the spectator is given this uncanny ability at the end.
O.P. Spread = Another simple worker that allows you to hand a shuffled pack to the spectator, boldly name the card they will choose, and after dealing through the cards face up freely selecting one to deal face down and having that card match the prediction. I will say it can appear confrontational, but I think careful scripting and a disarming demeanor can diffuse any tension (how’s that for alliteration?).
Standing Prediction = This is essentially a stand up version of open prediction. A prediction is announced and cards are dealt into the performer’s hand. Same as before, when the spectator chooses, they deal one face down and that card is the named prediction. I personally don’t think this is as strong as O.P. Spread, but it has its place and is worth trying out. It’s a good way to do an open prediction without writing things down or needing a table.
Fishing for One = This is my favorite effect in the book. It fooled me bad, and it is truly deceptive. A pack is shuffled by the spectator, cut anywhere they choose remember the card. The pack is handed back to the performer and they are able to divine what the glimpsed card is by asking the spectator to lie about the name of their card. This is so strong and direct, I will be using this regularly.
I think this book is a must for those who like cards and mentalism. Much thought has went into this book including alternative handlings for most of the effects, thorough credits and explanations, and even a bonus effect buried in the tome. I am a cheap guy, but this was a no-brainer and is probably one of the best purchases I have made. I didn’t expect to write such a long review, but I suppose there is a lot to discuss between the pages. 60 bucks for 150 or so pages of quality work is truly a deal for this great book.
